Stand Where King Stood

Filed under: Facilities — Tags: — pam @ 3:45 pm

aa_king_subj_eWhen Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. came to CCNY to give the commencement speech on June 12, 1963, graduation exercises were held in Lewisohn Stadium.  These days, the North Academic Center occupies the site where Lewisohn Stadium stood. So every time you enter the NAC to attend a class, study in Cohen Library, or meet up with your friends, you stand on the site where Dr. King addressed the 3,541 graduates of the Class of 1963 (and a total audience of 16,000) 50 years ago. As President Lisa noted yesterday in her email about Dr. King’s birthday, his speech talked about human progress only being possible through the hard work of individuals.  His words are just as relevant today as they were then, so when you next enter the NAC, pause a moment to think about how we can all work together to further Dr. King’s dream.
