March 21 is designated as Digital Literacy Day to recognize how libraries support digital literacy for all users. From a library point of view, access to online information is a fundamental component of equitable access to information, a core library value. Without Internet access it’s nearly impossible to get a job. It’s extremely difficult for a child to finish a school project. It’s virtually impossible to apply for college financial aid and it’s a challenge to file your taxes without being able to go online. Digital Literacy Day recognizes the tremendous service libraries and schools provide their communities with access to technology and the Internet.

FOI Day
March 16 is Freedom of Information (FOI) Day, an annual event on the birthday of James Madison, who is widely regarded as the Father of the Constitution and as the foremost advocate for openness in government. New York State government has been looking at issues of open access to information recently, considering NYSHEI’s Taxpayer Access to Publicly Funded Research (TAPFR) legislation, which may come to a vote around FOI Day.
